Hydrangea Stadium in North East Japan
Shinjo Municipal Stadium is nicknamed "Ajisai Stadium", because ajisai, which means hydrangea in Japanese, is City Flower of Shinjo, Yamagata Prefecture.
Located at Higashiyama Undo Koen (Higashiyama Sports Park), the baseball stadium is next to the huge hydrangea garden where you can enjoy 45,000 ajisai blossoms in early July.
Shinjo Municipal Stadium was first built in 1953, and later in 1993, pulled down and re-constructed because of the ageing facilities. I hope the grass outfield of the new ballpark will be better-maintained.
Ajisai Stadium is usually used for amateur baseball, such as high school baseball games, local industrial baseball tournament. Eastern League host official NPB games in 2005 and 2014.
