Can They Lure A NPB Franchise ?
Built in 2009 for 8,390 million yen (approximately $100 million), Hard Off Eco Stadium is one of the latest prefectural stadium.
Niigata prefectural government sold the naming rights to Niigata-based reuse affairs company Hard Off Corporation, which proposed to pay 30 million yen (apprximately $375,000) per year for a five-year deal.
With 30,000 capacity stadium, Niigata Prefecture and the City of Niigata demonstrated their hope to attract a NPB (Nippon Professional Baseball) franchise.
In 2010, Tokyo Broadcasting System, the owner company of the Yokohama Bay Stars, had a sell-off talk with a large housing conglomerate JS Group Corporation, which tried to move the BayStars to Niigata or Shizuoka. Finally, the negotiation failed.
2010 NPB All-Star Game #2 was held at Hard Off Eco Stadium for the first time in Niigata. They regularly host several official NPB games every season and some independant Baseball Challange League games for Niigata Albirex Baseball Club.
