Home of Japanese Chess
Tendo City , a small city located in eastern part of Yamagata Prefecture of Tohoku District, is the home of Japanese chess, Shogi. The city produces over 90% of all Shogi pieces in Japan.
You will come across shogi pieces in some shape and form anywhere in the city, on the roofs of taxis, on bridges, above post boxes and of course above the main entrance gate of the ballpark.
Tendo Municipal Sports Center was opened in 1989, constructing a gymnasium, tennis courts and a multipurpose ground. A baseball stadium was later completed in 1994.
Since Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of Pacific League started operation in 2005, their farm team have been playing some official games every season at Tendo Stadium. Other than that, the stadium is used for high school baseball tournament and other amateur baseball.
